MAULIDUL RASUL 2019

9th of November 2019 marks the celebration of Nabi Muhammad's birthday. It is celebrated around the world and in Brunei Darussalam more than a thousand muslims gathered in Bandar Seri Begawan to celebrate the auspicious moment. Scouts from many schools are also part of big celebration. Troop 1002 SOAS College Air Scouts also took part and provided service to dedicated Muslims on wheelchair. 

The guest of honor is always His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Dipertuan Negara of Brunei Darussalam, who always leads the grand procession. Before embarking the Sultan along with the members of the Royal Family greets the Scouts Association first followed by other NGOs. 

After celebration we had another small celebration at Burger King.

JOTAJOTI 2019

Yes its that time of the year when scouts all over the country gather to talk with other scouts from another country. The event is called Jamboree over the Air (JOTA) using Ham Radio and Jamboree over the Internet (JOTI) using Skype and other channels. SOAS College Air Scout Troop was one of the assistant for the event and helped made the event a success.

 Over 150 cub, junior, venture, rover, air and sea scouts took part in the activities. There were scouts from Japan, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia and Australia who were engaged to speak and share activities over the internet. The interaction was interesting as many cub scouts have never seen scouts from another country and having the same scouting spirit.

ATV ADVENTURE SUNDAY

Scouts do adventure by ATV. Suggested and co-organized by patrol leaders, the troop had an amazing Sunday morning. Learning basic mechanics of an ATV and learning to ride and control one was first time for many. The team went from one end of Tungku beach and to the furthest side they are allowed to go. It was also a great way to explore potential sites for next activities. 

The company engaged was RIFF ATV and they gave some briefing and guided the convoy throughout the activities. Safety first was the utmost important. Students must wear helmets and never overtake the ATV guide. There was a parent support as well as visiting teacher who also helped in keeping the students safe.

 

This is just a trail for the next activity. There might be a camp out planned before or after exams. We identified a good spot that has wind barrier and adequate shade. In conclusion, it was another great scout-style weekend!

HARI RAYA @ SCOUT HQ

Yesterday the troop had blast at the Sambutan Aidil Fitri Scout HQ. Meeting with old friends from other schools as well as making new ones. There were lots of food and some of them won lucky draw prizes. We look forward to next years event and we thank the organizers for doing a great job!

TROOP HIKING ACTIVITY

  

Hiking is one of the basic things scouts must be familiar with. Hiking teaches one to preparations, time management, team work and safety. The location was from Kampung Katok in Beribi to Kampung Tanjung Bunut in Sengkurong area. The hike started roughly around 6.30 am and finished at 8.00 am. The scouts learnt many things in just one activity such as, choosing the right trail, steps and how to manage water. The awesome scenery, fresh jungle air and orienting using visual landmarks was a plus.

  

VISIT TO NATIONAL SCOUT MUSEUM

One of the things to do after first quarter of the year is paperwork and documentation. New members are asked to come to Scout HQ to sort out membership forms for their patrols. This was a good opportunity to see some pictures and commemorative gifts from other scouts around the world. Luckily for the day, the national scout museum was opened. We asked permission and was lucky enough to do an unofficial visit. 

The exhibits were the history of scouting in Brunei, how it was before and who were the pioneers. We found out that one of our scout members, Ammar Jefri is actually a third generation scout. His grandfather, Skipper Yahya Yusof of 7th Troop SOAS College, was the first local Bruneian Scout Leader Trainer. There were a lot more exhibits featuring the 3 branches of scouting in Brunei. 

WORLD BUREAU BADGE CEREMONY 2019

18 new scout members received their world bureau badge today. The new members have spent many weekends of hard work, learning basic scouting skills. The world bureau badge is the first badge received for new scouts at any age. This badge is the same badge other scout around the world will wear after passing basic scout skill. It also symbolizes the unity and brotherhood of all scouts. 

Representing the principal was Cikgu Azri bin Haji Sulaiman, who is the Assistant Senior Master in SOAS College and representing District Commissioner was Skipper Zakaria Mohamad Nor, who is the assistant commissioner for boys and venture programs. 

 The ceremony was conducted by senior scouts lead by Rover Scout, Riduan bin Awang Haji Sulaiman, who also received his letter of appointment to officially assist SOAS College Air Troop 1002. Adam Rusydan bin Haji Ramli was also appointed and will team up to assist Cikgu Azri. The new members look forward to more activities such as camping, trekking, cooking and educational visits. The troop would like to thank all parents, students and school staff for making the ceremony a success.
